Abstract

This year the number of Internet users worldwide reached 2.27 billion, almost exactly twice what it was in 5 years ago, 1.15 billion. The increasing number of users, especially due to the popularization of web applications and web-based services, produces continuously capacity problems at data centers due to performance requirements. These web applications, which run on web servers, have an influence in energy consumption at data centers. Thus, a new challenge directly related to this area of research emerges: the energy efficiency of web systems. Additionally, new server virtualization technologies are appearing and have significant benefits in terms of hardware utilization, energy efficiency and configuration flexibility for its performance. We propose a short study of energy consumption in relation to web server virtualization and performance.
